<p>Description</p><p>Allied is looking for an experienced Medical Underwriter who has worked within large group and stop loss to join our growing team. The Large Group Medical Stop Loss Underwriter will work closely with the Head of MGU and be responsible for evaluating, pricing, and managing risk for large employer-sponsored self-funded health plans. They will also be responsible for the development, implementation, and ongoing refinement of large group capabilities, including rate manuals, underwriting guidelines, tools, processes, and related governance practices. A qualified candidate must have advanced underwriting expertise, financial analysis experience, and have demonstrated capabilities to develop competitive and profitable Stop Loss solutions for both new business and renewals. </p><p>The Underwriter will partner closely with brokers, consultants, and other business partners to drive growth, maintain profitability, and support strategic business objectives.</p><p><br/></p><p><strong>Responsibilities Include:</strong></p><p> </p><p><strong>Risk Assessment & Underwriting</strong></p><ul><li>Evaluate large group employer benefit plans and assess risk from a Stop Loss perspective, including Specific and Aggregate coverages</li><li>Analyze claims experience, large claimant details, utilization patterns, and plan design to determine risk exposure</li><li>Perform medical and financial analysis of ongoing high-cost claims and emerging risks.</li></ul><p><strong>Pricing & Financial Analysis</strong></p><ul><li>Develop and justify pricing using underwriting tools, actuarial models, and independent judgment.</li><li>Determine rate levels, aggregate factors, and cost-of-risk assumptions. </li><li>Issue final rates and maintain accountability for all pricing decisions.</li></ul><p><strong>New Business & Renewals</strong></p><ul><li>Drive new business production while maintaining underwriting discipline and profitability targets</li><li>Manage a portfolio of assigned accounts with responsibility for: <ul> <li>Renewal rate development</li> <li>Persistency and retention</li> <li>Loss ratio performance</li> </ul></li></ul><p><strong>Portfolio Management & Profitability</strong></p><ul><li>Own profitability and performance of assigned block of business. </li><li>Monitor key metrics such as loss ratios, close ratios, and renewal increases. </li><li>Identify adverse trends and take proactive corrective action.</li><li>Ensure adherence to underwriting guidelines, authority levels, and regulatory standards. </li><li>Coordinate cross-functionally to support stop loss policy issue, premium collection and claim approvals. </li></ul><p>Requirements</p><ul><li>Must have a Bachelor's degree or equivalent work experience</li><li>Must have 6+ years of medical stop loss underwriting experience, large group focus is preferred</li><li>Demonstrated experience managing complex cases, high-risk groups, and both new business production and renewal underwriting is required</li><li>Needs an understanding of top loss market dynamics and emerging risk trends</li><li>Will act as a subject matter expert and mentor for Underwriting Staff, providing training and guidance on large group risk assessment, pricing methodology, and emerging claim trends</li></ul>
