The Post and Courier News Intern - Furman University at Evening Post Publishing

<p>The Post and Courier, South Carolina&apos;s statewide leader in award-winning news coverage, is looking for an energetic, motivated college news intern to work alongside our dedicated journalists in our newsroom. As a news intern, you will have the opportunity to contribute to all facets of the newsroom, including reporting, writing, visuals, audience and social media. Interns may work on individual reporting assignments or as part of a team providing reporting and research for larger projects.</p> <p><strong>Responsibilities:</strong></p> <ul><li>Produce assigned stories from a variety of beats. Stories should be accurate in fact, tone and implication.</li><li>Pitch, develop and produce story ideas from ongoing coverage, local issues, developed sources, etc.</li><li>Coordinate assignments and schedule with editors, keeping them well-informed about developments and potential challenges.</li><li>Learn and use videography, photography and social media engagement as storytelling tools.</li><li>Learn and use available job technology and systems.</li><li>Learn to develop knowledgeable, diverse sources for stories.</li><li>Maintain a weekly journal of activity and attend check-in meetings as assigned.</li></ul> <p><strong>Requirements, Minimum Education Level and Experience:</strong></p> <ul><li>Pursuing a Bachelors degree in Journalism, Mass Communication, English or relevant field.</li><li>Enrolled in Furman University.&#xa0;</li></ul> <p><strong>Knowledge, Skills and Abilities</strong></p> <ul><li>Strong communication and interpersonal skills associated with developing trusting relationships and maintaining a high level of confidentiality.</li><li>Strong organization and prioritization skills with excellent follow through.</li><li>Ability to prioritize workload, handle multiple assignments and meet deadlines</li><li>Strong, professional work ethic</li><li>Excellent social media skills</li><li>Good customer relation skills with the ability to easily and professionally speak and work with readers and the public</li><li>Ability to work remotely, if necessary</li></ul> <p><strong>Physical Requirements, Work Environment and Travel:</strong></p> <ul><li>Regularly required to sit for long periods of time; close eye work on computer screen; required to stand, walk, reach with hands and arms, bend and stoop; light to moderate lifting 15-30 pounds.</li><li>The worker is frequently subject to inside environmental conditions, which provide protection from weather conditions but not necessarily from temperature changes and is sometimes subject to adverse outside environmental conditions.</li><li>Local travel may be required.</li></ul> <p>The Post and Courier is an equal opportunity, drug free workplace.</p>
